About Aharbal
Set among the pine-covered mountains of the Pir Panjal Range, Aharbal is known for the spectacular waterfall created by the Vishav River. The river plunges about 25 metres over the rocks, creating a powerful and impressive cascade. Located in the southwestern part of Kashmir in Kulgam district, Aharbal is around 75 kilometres from Srinagar and lies at an elevation of approximately 2,266 metres above sea level.
The tremendous volume of water rushing over the rocks creates a powerful roar that can be heard from a considerable distance. As visitors approach the waterfall, the sound becomes increasingly dramatic, contrasting beautifully with the peaceful surroundings. Visitors can also walk close to the edge of the waterfall, adding an element of adventure to the experience.
Aharbal is sometimes described as the “Niagara Falls of Kashmir” because of the large volume of water flowing through the falls. The Vishav River originates deep within the pine and fir forests, near the beautiful Kounsarnag Lake, situated at an altitude of about 13,500 feet.
Aharbal also serves as an important starting point for the trek to Kounsarnag. The route takes trekkers through magnificent high-altitude valleys and meadows, where they can see colourful wildflowers, alpine trees, flowing streams and diverse wildlife. The combination of mountain scenery, forests and the roaring waters of the Vishav River makes the area particularly attractive to nature lovers and trekkers.
During the warmer months, Aharbal is also a popular picnic destination for local residents and school groups, especially for people looking to escape the high temperatures of the plains.
Aharbal is easily accessible from Srinagar. It is located about 8 kilometres from the Mughal Road and can be reached by road through Pulwama and Shopian. The journey from Srinagar generally takes around two hours by car or bus. Aharbal is approximately 18 kilometres south of Shopian town and around 28 kilometres west of Kulgam. Another route provides access to Aharbal through Kulgam.
The Aharbal Development Authority has developed basic tourist facilities in the area, including huts and a cafeteria. Accommodation and food facilities are also available for visitors.
Aharbal Waterfall & Kounsarnag Trek
Aharbal is more than a beautiful waterfall. For trekkers, it is also the gateway to the spectacular Kounsarnag region, offering high-altitude landscapes, mountain meadows, alpine forests and some of Kashmir’s most impressive scenery.
Meadows – Kongwattan
The scenic meadows of Kongwattan lie approximately halfway along the traditional trekking route to the high-altitude Kounsarnag Lake. Surrounded by dense forests of lush alpine trees, Kongwattan is a peaceful and beautiful meadow, mostly inhabited by Gujjar communities during the summer months.
The Vishav River flows through the area, and visitors can enjoy fishing for trout. Fishing, however, requires a permit, which can be obtained from the Fisheries Department office at Aharbal.
Zachimarag
Zachimarag Meadow is located about 4 kilometres from Chiranbal and lies at the foot of the Brahmashakri hills. The meadow is situated at an elevation of approximately 300 metres above sea level and provides an excellent setting for camping and angling.
Lakes – Kounsarnag
Kounsarnag is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the region, covering an area of approximately 110 hectares. The lake is surrounded by the steep ridges of the Pir Panjal Range and lies at an altitude of about 13,500 feet (4,115 metres). read more,
Kounsarnag can be reached through Kongwattan and Sakigen meadows. The trek from Aharbal to Kounsarnag generally takes around two to three days, depending on the route and trekking conditions.
Chiranbal Meadows
The beautiful meadows of Chiranbal can be reached by a 4×4 vehicle during the summer months via Hallan Manzgam. Surrounded by dense green forests, Chiranbal offers a peaceful mountain setting and serves as a base camp for exploring the surrounding areas.
The meadow is overlooked by the Chersar and three nearby peaks, which are popularly known together as the Three Brahmashar (Brahmashakri) peaks.
Mahinag & Miksar
Mahinag and Miksar are freshwater alpine lakes situated at an altitude of approximately 3,000 metres. They can be found along the trekking route towards Kounsarnag and form part of the beautiful high-altitude landscape of the region.
