Day wise Itinerary for Great Lakes Trek

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek itinerary, The basic trekking  is Seven Nights eight Day, To Complete the total  Trekking route from Sonamarg to Naranag. There are Countless unexplored alpine lakes which needs more time to explore. Itinerary  Details, The Breakfast is served around 7.30.A.M every morning. The trek starts 8.30. A.M in the morning. You will carry your pack lunch and 12.30 to 1 .pm. is lunch time. Trekking Guide and  Back up horse will company you in small batches. and big batches will have Guide, co-guide and two back up horses.

Day 1 : Sind Valley  Sonamarg  Sutkadi Altitude 2800 Meters 

Srinagar to Sonamarg : The journey Start’s after noon from Srinagar center by car up to  Sonamarg 3 hours Drive. Over night foot hills of Tajwais glacier.   On bank of Sind River in camps.  This is very important for acclimatization.  A short hike to tajwais glacier can be wonderful to get in high altitude condition.

Day 2: Nichnai valley  altitude 3500 Meters

Sonamarg to Nichnai 6 Hours Trek 11 km Distance: The Path Start from Sonamarg up to shekdur.  The Trail encounters long pine trees , Vast pastures , covered with lush green grass ,white mountains , and glacier stream that will run along the way.  The trail leads through silver birch forest and finally leads through  boulders route up to Nichnai  valley. This is your first day on high altitude so headache is common.

Day 3 : Vishansar Lake   Altitude 4000 Meters

Nichnai to Vishansar Lake 7 hours trek and 13 km Distance : The Route Start’s from Nichinai valley,  The first 3 hours climb up to Nichnai pass is steep .  The Pass is almost 4000 meters high.  The meadows en route are carpeted with a startling array of wild flowers and incorporates the magical  view of great Himalayan mountains.  After Nichnai top descending gradually to the Vishansar Lake campsite. This is First Alpine lake in Kashmir Great Lakes.

Day 4 : Vishansar and Krishansar Lake

Krishansar lake:It is rest day you can  make a short hiking tour up to krishansar lake , and do sight-seen  around , trout angling can be option. The meadows around lakes are very beautiful .

Day 5 : Yamsar and Gadsar Lake   Altitude 4300 Meters 

Vishansar to Gadsar Lake 8 Hours Trek and 16 km Distance: This is a Difficult  day for every one in team, You need best weather to cross the Gadsar pass.The Track Start’s from Vishansar the first climb to Krishansar lake is easy going.  From Krishansar lake two hours very steep ascend up to Gadsar pass 4300 meters. From the pass the real paradise begin of magical great lakes.  On a clear day a magnificent view of yamsar lake and the Nanga Parvat is possible.  Wild flowers, glaciers, rare herbs, wild animals are other beauty of this trail.

Day 6 :  Mengendob Satsar Lake Altitude 3400 meters

Gadsar to Mengendob 4 hours trek and 10 km Distance: The trail starts from Gadsar campsite. After crossing the snow bridge it is a easy ascend up to Kustoorkut. Then turn left  to satsaran lakes this is only permanent settlement of Nomadic tribes of Dards, across the  jawdora village. After reaching the campsite you can visit near by satsar lake.

Day 7 : Harmukh Peak and Gangabal Lakes  Altitude 4000 Meters 

Megandob To Gangabal Twin lakes 6 hours trek and 11 km Distance: The Track starts with climb from mengandob to zaji pass 3 hour.   From zaji pass you will see twin lakes of Gangabal and Nandkhol Twin lakes with the clear view of Mount Harmukh 5400 mt and khoulsar lake. There are other small lakes to view from the pass.  From Zaji pass it is bit diffcult descend to Gangabal campsite near the lake.

Day 8 :  Naranag Village and Temple Altitude 2200 Meters

Gangabal to  Naranag valley 6 hours Trek and 15 km Distance: The path starts with easy  Walking up to Trundkhul, Budshare top. From top it is difficult descend to Naranag village ,It is worth to see Naranag temple before  drive back to Srinagar.

Best time : Month Of July , The Trek begins normally from first of July the passes are under snow and campsites are clear and dry. It is best time for snow lovers and adventure lovers. Month Of August; It is middle season of trek Little bit snow in pockets of trails ,Clear passes and lot of wild flowers around vishansar and krishansar lakes. Month Of September : The beginning of September is very beautiful the meadows around Gadsar are in full bloom. From second week the Autumn begins every thing turns dry the mountains change color to yellow it is best time for Photography.

Weather:The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek starts from sonamarg about 2800 meters from sea level. The weather remains unpredictable , short rains ,hails , low speed storms , den fogs are expected during high passes.  It is advisable to avoid further proceeding during bad weather on trek. Temperature: Days are warmer 20/0°c to 25/0°c and nights are about 10/0°c. The higher we go the Temperature drops and cold winds at evening  drops down the temperature.

Difficulties:The  Great lakes trek has three major passes about 4000 meters elevation, the trek needs physical and mental strength to complete the trek. The average walking in a  day is about 7 hours. The trek is moderate Difficult. Having any major health issue for example Asthma  , hearth deceases ,over weight ,it is advisable to avoid the trek. having minor health issues it is advisable to take customize riding horse for precautions. I would recommend it to anyone with a modicum of fitness and a few days acclimatization.

Fitness Tips:The trekkers  need  month preparation to enjoy high altitude trek. Regular running up to 3 to 5 km daily. Start with gradually and surpass the pace  day by day wise. Do a few squats and extends to expand your stamina. Food has parcel to do with your stamina. Home cures have awesome result, take garlic soup each dinner, use ginger tea in breakfast. The high elevation passes  needs essential Fitness as the trekkers need to run over the challenges,trekkers need to adjust before endeavoring the trek.

GLK experience

Me and my group done the GLK for 8D+7N with Mr Riyaz Pakhtoon. It was very short to enjoy the hills and mountains(that was exactly happen to me). Trek has been an awesome experience with breathtaking views of valley, river & mountains. Everything was beautiful and fresh during trek. The hospitality of Mr Riyaz service was incredible. We have no issues an accommodation.

The food was so good, fresh and the most important is "balanced food" credit goes to chief Cook Mr Taariq (riyaz brother) for the unexpected yummy food.
All the crew was amazing and FUN!! We really enjoy with them. All of them humble, professional, friendly & supportive. Thank you Riyaz crew for taking care of us during the trek. Mansoor our guide know the best spots to take the photo. I love every picture that i have. Credit goes to Mansoor for the great picture. Overall the tour was amazing & filled pure of joy. This is the moment that i remember for the rest of my life because of the great lake.
